Department and Course Codes
The department or program and course subject codes for all units of the University are arranged in the single alphabetical list that appears below. The subject course code is the registrar’s official symbol for the subject and is used in records, reports, schedules, transcripts, and other references to a Department, Program, or Course.
Numbering indicates the level of the material covered in courses:
1000 – 1999 Introductory undergraduate courses
Foundational courses introducing concepts and skills of disciplines, designed to promote student achievement of one or more program learning goals (major, minor, or core).
Seniors should exercise due consideration before taking 1000-level courses, since elementary courses may appear inappropriate on a senior’s transcript.
2000 – 2999 Lower-division undergraduate courses
Lower-level courses introducing a specific area or theme within disciplines. The course is designed to either introduce or reinforce student achievement of one or more program learning goals (major, minor, or core).
3000 – 3999 Upper-division undergraduate courses
Upper-level courses building on concepts and skills from lower level, foundational courses; may include research, increased reading and writing assignments. The course is designed to reinforce student achievement of one or more program learning goals (major, minor, or core).
4000 – 4999 Advanced courses open to both undergraduate and graduate students
Advanced, major-level courses, applying concepts and skills from pre-requisite courses; likely to include independent research, project-based work, presentations, heavier reading and writing assignments. The course is designed to promote student mastery of one or more program learning goals (major or minor).
5000 – 5999 Graduate-level courses
Master's and foundational doctoral level courses. These are open to graduate students as well as undergraduates who have received approval from the Graduate School.
6000 – 7999 Doctoral-level courses
Doctoral level courses for the Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree program (pending final authorization from the state and accrediting bodies).
When courses are cross-listed between more than one department or program or between levels, the full description of the course is found under both departments/programs or levels. At the time of the registration, students who register for a cross-listed course must choose the appropriate department/program or level in which they desire credit for the course. In cases of cross-listed undergraduate and graduate sections, graduate students must register for the graduate-level section (e.g. 5000s).
