Substance Use Disorders Counseling Certificate

Program Description 

(For graduate level students not enrolled in JCU’s clinical mental health counseling master’s program)

The certificate program in Substance Use Disorders Counseling is a five- to six-course, fifteen- to eighteen-semester-hour program. The program can be taken for graduate credit, no credit, or continuing education credit. It is designed for individuals seeking licensure as a chemical dependency counselor. Individuals holding a bachelor’s degree may attain licensure as a licensed chemical dependency counselor II or III; individuals with a master’s degree in a behavioral science may attain licensure as a licensed independent chemical dependency counselor.

The certificate program helps students enhance their knowledge and abilities to:

  • Assess, and then develop a treatment plan for individuals experiencing substance use disorders. 

  • Facilitate group interventions for substance use disorders.

  • Evaluate the support system: the family, extended family, and community of those with substance use disorders.

  • Plan appropriate follow-up services and continuing care for those experiencing substance use disorders.

Admission Criteria

  • For applicants without a master’s degree, a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75.

  • Official transcripts for highest degree earned.

  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably one academic and one professional).

  • Interview with the program coordinator.
