Course Description

Development of African slavery in the Western hemisphere in the early modern period. Themes include the African background, the European origins of chattel slavery, the development of racism, labor, resistance, community life, religion, and the abolition movement. Students who have taken HS 343 (an ISJ course) cannot enroll in HS 3143. Prerequisite: EN 125 or equivalent. Corequisite: DATA 2143.
