Advanced Standing and Transfer of Credit

Advanced Standing and Transfer of Credit.  A Master’s degree student at John Carroll University may transfer graduate credit earned prior to JCU matriculation (aka Advanced Standing) and/or concurrently as a transient or visiting student at another graduate school under the following conditions:

  • For Advanced Standing, the request for advanced standing should be made at the time of first admission to matriculated status. The credit should not be more than six years old and the request must be approved by both the graduate program director concerned and the appropriate dean.

  • For transient credit, approval of the advisor, graduate program director, and the appropriate dean is required prior to enrollment in the course or courses concerned.

  • The combination of Advanced Standing and Transfer of Credit is subject to the following maximum allowance, as determined by the credit count of the JCU graduate program toward which coursework is being transferred:

    • Graduate programs totaling 44 credit hours or less may accept up to 6 credits in transfer.

    • Programs totaling between 45 and 59 credit hours may accept up to 9 credits in transfer.

    • Programs of 60 credits or more may accept up to, but no more, than 12 credits in transfer.

  • Students in the Boler College’s M.B.A. programs may transfer multiple credits from other Jesuit M.B.A. programs through the JEBNET consortium.

  • Courses used to complete requirements for other degrees will not ordinarily be accepted for transfer.

  • A letter grade of B or better (which does not include B-) must be obtained in any course considered for transfer credit.  However, only the credits are transferred; the grades received do not affect the student’s quality-point average at John Carroll.

Official transcripts must be submitted for all credits considered for transfer.
